SAF Young People's Theater

Since 1999, the historic Sheridan Opera House has been home to the SAF Young People's Theater, a diverse and flourishing center for young thespians, enrolling more than 250 children between the ages of 2 and 18 each year.

With an emphasis on child-centered learning that caters to each student's individual needs, our curriculum ensures an educational process that nurtures both cognitive and creative growth.

The SAF YPT upholds the philosophy that dramatic learning experiences should be non-competitive, and we do not require our students to audition. Young people at varying levels of ability and experience are invited to embark upon extraordinary journeys of wonder, discovery and imaginative delight.

The Sheridan Arts Foundation has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarship awards to Telluride's youth since the program's inception. Additionally, we subsidize all tuition prices to keep them affordable for all families.

Meet our SAF Young People's Theater Artistic Director Leah Heidenreich

Leah Heidenreich is beyond thrilled for her third season as the SAFYPT Artistic Director! Leah has thirteen years of experience both directing and music directing children's theater, as well as working as a choreographer, private voice coach, and music instructor. After receiving her BA in musical theatre from The University Of Northern Colorado, Leah spent several years in New York City as a performance artist, a music director, and as a children's theatre coach. Leah has extensive experience with children from infancy through high school, and has a huge passion for exposing theater to kids of all ages. An advocate for non-competitive children's theater, Leah adamantly believes that theater crafts cognitive skills, as well as self-confidence, team-work, public speaking, and many other attributes that set a child up for well-rounded adulthood. YPT caps each class to ensure that each participant receives ample stage time and one-on-one with directors. Leah hopes to see your child's name on a YPT roster this year!
